“Kishori Lal Sharma ji has been working for the Congress party in Amethi for 40 years. He has a relationship with the people of Amethi. Perhaps, the BJP didn't understand that Kishori Lal Sharma is a person closely connected to Amethi, and his victory was certain. I would like to congratulate him…” Rahul Gandhi said in a press conference.

"It is wrong to say he is a PA,” he added.

Amethi Election Results 2024 Live: Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, who is on the verge of pulling off a major upset by defeating Union Minister Smriti Irani from Amethi, termed this a victory of the 'Gandhi family' and the people of Amethi.

KL Sharma, the long associate of the Gandhi family was given the responsibility of winning back the party's once-held bastion.

"This is the victory of the Gandhi family and the people of Amethi...the counting is still taking place, so I won't call it a victory now," Sharma told ANI.

“I didn't fight this election, the people of Amethi did…The Gandhi family gave me the ticket and bestowed a responsibility on me, and I think I am fulfilling their expectations,” the Congress candidate said.

Kishori Lal, a Punab native, first came to Amethi in 1983 as a Congress worker and was closely associated with former prime minister (late) Rajiv Gandhi. After Rajiv Gandhi's death in 1991, he kept working for the party in Amethi. He played a key role in Sonia Gandhi's first electoral win in 1999. Read more about him here.

Amethi Election Result 2024 Live: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi decided not to contest from Amethi this time, a seat which was a Congress stronghold till his defeat to Smriti Irani in 2019. This time, Rahul Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha poll from Rae Bareli, replacing his mother Sonia Gandhi and from Waynad where he won last time.

In Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi is leading ahead of BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh with 255698 votes. In Waynad, he is leading by 324320 ahead of his closest rival Annie Raja of the Communist Party of India.

Born on March 23, 1976, Smriti Irani was a prominent figure in the television industry before entering politics. She served as the Union Human Resource Development Minister (now called Education Minister) from May 2014 to July 2016. She was the minister of Information and Broadcasting from July 2017 to May 2018.

Congress fielded KL Sharma from Amethi for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After 2014 and 2019, many were hoping for another contest between Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani but the former decided to contest from Rae Bareli instead.
