Vinesh Phogat's wait for a verdict on her Olympics silver continues

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict highlights: The wait continues for Vinesh Phogat and the rest of the country as the deadline for the announcement of Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) ad hoc division's verdict has been further postponed to August 16. While it was earlier announced that the verdict will be made public at 9.30pm IST on August 14, it has now been pushed back two days. This is the third time that the announcement has been delayed. Having heard both sides of the argument last Friday after Vinesh appealed against her disqualification from the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final, CAS was expected to announce its verdict on the matter on Saturday. However, CAS extended the deadline until Tuesday at 9:30 pm IST....Read More

Vinesh's glorious run at Paris Olympics

Vinesh took the wrestling world by storm last Tuesday when she beat then-defending champion and world no. 1 Yusi Susaki of Japan in her opener. Trailing 0-2 and with less than 40 seconds to go, Vinesh pulled off an absolute stunner to seal a 3-2 victory, subsequently leaving her in tears. Just a year ago, she was in New Delhi protesting against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh, and now she had sealed a win against a wrestling royalty. She then defeated Ukraine's Oksana Liyach in the quarter-finals, followed by an easy win against Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman in the semis to become the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

Why Vinesh was disqualified from gold-medal bout

However, she was disqualified from the gold-medal bout against eventual winner Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States as she was found 100 grams above the prescribed limit in the customary morning weigh-in. Devasted by the cruel turn of fate and having suffered from dehydration, after taking extreme measures to cut down the three kilos of weight gained through the course of her three bouts on Tuesday, Vinesh lost consciousness and was admitted to a polyclinic inside the Games village.

Upon recovery, she appealed to the CAS, demanding a joint silver medal alongside Guzman Lopez, who replaced her for the final bout following the disqualification. The CAS has postponed their verdict to August 13, and if it's in Phogat's favour, then India's Paris 2024 medal tally will increase to seven. Phogat has two World C'ships bronze medals, three golds in CWG and also multiple medals in Asian Games and Asian C'ships to her name.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: Vinesh deserves a medal, says Sreejesh

(AFP)

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: PR Sreejesh, who ended his illustrious career as the goalkeeper of the Indian men's hockey team at the Paris Olympics, has said that Vinesh Phogat deserves a medal after reaching the final of the women's 50kg wrestling competition in Paris after being disqualified for being merely 100 gram over-weight.

"There are two views, one being an athlete she deserves a medal, getting into the final, they snatched it from her, silver for sure. She was strong. If I was in her situation, I don't what I would have done," Sreejesh said at an interaction with PTI editors at its headquarters here on Tuesday.

"The next day before our bronze medal match I met her and she said 'Bhai good luck, play well'. I felt like she was hiding her pain with that smile. She is a real fighter."

Sreejesh, 36, who won back-to-back Olympic bronze medals in his glorious 18-year-old career, however, felt Vinesh's case should be a lesson for all Indian athletes.

"The second part is just different because you have Olympic rules and the Indian athletes know what is happening there and they should be ready for that. They shouldn't give any chance to the federation, to the organising committee, to the International Olympic Committee (OC).

"So it should be a lesson for everyone. When you are prepared for that you have to be strict with rules and regulations," he said.

The fact that she didn't win Olympic medals in 2016 and 2021 was down to pure bad luck with injuries and it took a seismic event to stop her from winning a medal in 2024.

Vinesh has won two World Championships bronze medals (2019 and 2022), an Asian Games gold (2018) and bronze (2014), and three Commonwealth Games gold medals (2014, 2018, 2022). She also won gold in the Asian Championships (2021) and has earned silver and bronze at the continental level.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: What Sachin Tendulkar said about Vinesh's medal appeal after disqualification

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: "Every sport has rules and those rules need to be seen in context, maybe even revisited at times. Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals. Her disqualification by weight was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense," Sachin Tendulkar said.

"It would have been understandable if an athlete were to have been disqualified for ethical breaches such as the usage of performance enhancing drugs. In that case, to not be awarded any medal and be placed last would be justifiable. However, Vinesh beat her opponents fairly to reach the top two. She definitely deserves a silver medal. While we all wait for a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, let us hope and pray that Vinesh gets the recognition she deserves," Tendulkar added.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: What did Vinesh's team reveal to CAS over weigh-in fiasco?

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: According to a report in Indian Express, Vinesh's team reasoned that the wrestler was overweight by 100 grams due to the distance between the Champ de Mars Arena (the competition venue) and the Athletes Village, and the tight schedule between bouts. The report further added that Vinesh's team argued that the 100 grams of extra weight would not have given her any competitive edge and it was a result of ‘classic and essential recovery process.’

"The excess of 100g is extremely negligible (representing around 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the athlete’s weight) and can easily be caused by the bloating of a human body during summer weather, as the heat makes the human body retain more water, scientifically for survival purposes. It can also be due to muscle mass increase as the athlete competed three times on the same day. It can also be caused by the food consumption of the athlete after the competitions to sustain her health and integrity for the demanding competitions,” Vinesh’s counsel submitted.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: The wait continues…

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: The deadline for the announcement of the verdict has been extended to August 14 and so, any developments that come before that will only be related to past events. Just to summarise: Vinesh, who stormed into the final of the women's 50kg freestyle event with three convincing wins, including against wrestling royalty Yui Susaki of Japan last Tuesday, was debarred from the gold medal bout against eventual winner Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States as she was found 100gm above the prescribed limit in the customary morning weigh-in.

Shocked by the dramatic turn of events, the crestfallen grappler last Wednesday appealed against the decision at the CAS and demanded that she be given a joint silver with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to Vinesh but was later promoted to the final following the Indian's disqualification.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: Rei Higuchi's message for Vinesh

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates: Rei Higuchi beat India's Aman Sehrawat on his way to the men's 57kg gold. He had bounced back from a similar situation to the one Vinesh faced here. In fact, in some ways it was even more brutal. Higuchi was disqualified from the Tokyo Olympics for being 50gm over his weight. He used the word “s**t” to describe the rule of having to make weight twice during the Olympics, something that wasn't the case before Tokyo 2020. Before that, he had expressed his sympathy for Vinesh. "I understand your pain the best. same 50g. Don't worry about the voices around you. Life goes on. Rising from setbacks is the most beautiful thing. Take a good rest," he tweeted in response to Vinesh's retirement announcement.
