Asia Cup Insights

The 2023 Asia Cup is expected to be another bumper event, with every team in the competition either attempting to get into gear for the ODI World Cup following soon on its heels, or leave an impact on the tournament that will remain in the memories of cricket fans.

This will be the 16th edition of the Asia Cup, and here are some interesting facts about the Asia Cup from the past and heading into this tournament:

Host Sri Lanka looking to replicate magic at home

The 2023 tournament is being jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka — the first time in the history of the Asia Cup that it is being jointly held across two nations. While this is only the second time Pakistan are hosting the event, this is the fifth time the Lankans are hosting the tournament.

Sri Lanka have a stellar record while being the hosts of the tournament, reaching the finals on all 4 occasions in the past, and winning thrice. Interestingly, the only final the Sri Lankans lost, in 2010, was the only time the final wasn’t held in Colombo due to renovations occurring at the R Premadasa Stadium, which is scheduled to host the 2023 final as well.

Nepal’s first Asia Cup

The ICC’s five Asian full member nations — Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh — earned automatic entry into the tournament, but a sixth spot was contested for in the ACC Men’s Premier Cup. This was the inaugural edition of that play-in tournament, contested between Nepal, Oman, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Nepal beat UAE in the finals of that competition to earn their place in the Asia Cup proper, and will compete in the competition for the first time in their history.

Rohit Sharma returns as ODI captain

While Rohit Sharma only became permanent ODI captain in 2021, this will be the second Asia Cup 50-over tournament he leads India in, after the 2018 edition in which Virat Kohli was rested. This will be a significant tournament for Rohit, who will also be captain for India at the World Cup: it will be integral for him to gain knowledge of captaining the squad in tournament conditions.

The tournament will also provide a stern test for Babar Azam and Dasun Shanaka, neither of whom have captained at an ODI World Cup and will rely on this experience.
